Simple Past Tense Passive Voice Exercises with Answers

Today, we will learn how to change the Simple Past Tense active voice into a passive voice. Through these examples, you will be able to understand the rules for changing the active voice of Simple Past Tense into a passive voice.

Structure of Active and Passive Voice in Simple Past Tense


Active Voice


Subject +II form of verb (V2)+ object


Passive Voice


 Object  +  was/were + past participle (V3)+ by+ subject

 

Rules for changing from Active to Passive


1.  Identify the object in the active sentence and make it the subject of the passive sentence.

2.  Use ‘was/were’ according to the new subject (object of active voice)

3.  Use ‘past participle (V3)’.

4.  Write the 'subject' in the end of passive after ‘by’ .

5.  Unnecessary subjects can be omitted.



Examples Active -Passive


     1.             She wrote a letter

    P.V. – A letter was written by her.


      2.           They ate apples.

P.V. – Apples were eaten by them.


      3.       He sang a song.

P.V. – A song was sung by him.


      4.      The teacher taught English.

P.V. -English was taught by the teacher.


       5.         She cooked food.

P.V. – Food was cooked by her.


       6.       We watched movie.

P.V. – Movie was watched by us.


       7.         He watered the plants.

P.V. – The plants were watered by him.


       8.          She washed the clothes.

P.V. – The clothes were washed by her.


       9.          They cleaned the house.

P.V. – The house was cleaned by them.


    10.             The shopkeeper sold fruits.

P.V. – Fruits were sold by the shopkeeper.


    11.          The students learnt the lessons.

P.V. -The lessons were learnt by the students.


    12.                He checked emails.

P.V. – Emails were checked by him.


    13.                My mother cooked cake.

P.V. – Cake was cooked by my mother.


    14.               My father read newspaper.

P.V. – Newspaper was read by my father.


    15.               She designed a website.

P.V. – A website was designed by her.


    16.              The farmer grew crops.

P.V. – Crops were grown by the farmer.


    17.              The dog chased the cat.

P.V. – The cat was chased by the dog.


    18.               She decorated the room.

P.V. – The room was decorated by her.


    19.              He solved puzzles.

P.V. – Puzzles were solved by him.


     20.           They played football.

P.V. – Football was played by them.

 

     21.                I wrote a letter.

P.V. – A letter was written by me.


    22.                John wrote an email.

P.V. – An email was written by John.

 

    23.              The children flew kites.

P.V. – Kites were flown by the children.


    24.               The mechanic fixed the engine.

P.V. – The engine was fixed by the mechanic.


    25.                The chef   prepared the food.

P.V. – The food was prepared by the chef.
