Structure of Active and Passive Voice in Simple Present Tense
Active Voice
Subject + I form verb (V1)+ object
Passive Voice
Object + is/are/am + past participle (V3)+ by+ subject
Rules for changing from Active to passive
1. Identify
the object in the active sentence and make it the subject of the passive
sentence.
2. Use
‘is/are/am’ according to the new subject (object of active voice)
3. Use
‘past participle (V3)’.
4. Write
‘subject’ in the end of passive
after ‘by’ .
5. Unnecessary
‘subjects’ can be omitted.
Examples Active -Passive
1. She writes a letter.
P.V.- A letter is written by her.
2. They eat apples.
P.V.- Apples are eaten by
them.
3. He sings a song.
P.V.- A
song is sung by him.
4. The teacher teaches English.
P.V.- English is taught by
the teacher.
5. She cooks food.
P.V.- Food
is cooked by her.
6. We watch movies.
P.V.- Movies are watched
by us.
7. He waters the plants.
P.V.- The
plants are watered by him.
8. She washes the clothes.
P.V.- The clothes are washed by her.
9. They clean the house.
P.V.- The
house is cleaned by them.
10. The shopkeepers sell fruits.
P.V.- Fruits are sold by
the shopkeepers.
11. The students complete the assignments.
P.V.- The
assignments are completed by the students.
12. The company hires new employees.
P.V.- New employees are hired
by the company.
13. He checks the emails.
P.V.- Emails
are checked by him.
14. The principal announces the
result.
P.V.- The result is
announced by the principal.
15. She designs websites.
P.V.- Websites
are designed by her.
16. The sun gives us light.
P.V.- We are given light
by the sun.
17. The scientist discovers new
elements.
P.V.- New
elements are discovered by the scientist.
18. The wind blows the leaves.
P.V.- The leaves are blown by the wind.
19. The farmer grows crops.
P.V.- Crops
are grown by the farmer.
20. The police catch thieves.
P.V.- Thieves are caught
by the police.
21. The dog chases the cat.
P.V.- The cat is chased by
the dog.
22. My father reads newspaper.
P.V.- Newspaper is read by
my father.
23. My mother cook a cake.
P.V.- A cake
is cooked by my mother.
24. She decorates the room.
P.V.- The room is
decorated by her.
25. I learn English.
P.V.- English is learnt/learned by
me.
