Ethene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon belonging to the Alkene series. ethene is the first member of the alkene series. We will learn how to draw the electron dot structure of ethene.
We will discuss the electron dot structure of ethene through the following points
1. Formula of ethene
2. Electronic
configuration of carbon
3. Electronic
configuration of hydrogen
4. Find the
central atom in the compound
5.Draw the
structural formula of ethene
6. Electron
dot structure of ethene
Formula of ethene
`C_2H_4`
Electronic configuration of carbon
`1s^2 2s^2 2p^2`
Carbon has four valence electrons in the outermost
shell.
Electronic configuration of hydrogen
`1s^1`
Hydrogen has one valence electron in the outermost
shell.
Find the central atom in the compound
There are two carbon atoms and four hydrogen atoms in an ethene molecule. All hydrogen atoms are arranged around the two carbon atoms.
Structural formula of ethene
Carbon atom requires four electrons to complete its
octet and each hydrogen atom requires one electron to complete its octet.
Each carbon atom shares its 2 valence electrons with other carbon atoms and
forms a double bond and 1-1 valence
electron with two hydrogen atoms through a single bond.
So there is one double between both carbon atoms and a single bond between carbon and hydrogen atoms.
