Preparation of washing soda class 10

You must have read Chapter 2  Acids, Bases, and Salts as a class 10 student. We have already discussed the preparation of baking soda in the chapter.

Today, we'll go into  depth about the preparation of washing soda

 Chemical formula of washing soda

`Na_2CO_3. 10H_2O`

There are 10 molecules of crystalline water with one molecule of sodium carbonate.

Chemical Name of Washing Soda

Sodium carbonate

Physical Properties of Washing Soda

    1.  It is a transparent crystalline solid

    2.  Soluble in water

    3.  Its solution in water is alkaline.

    4.  It losses water on heating.

Preparation method

Washing soda can be prepared by heating sodium hydrogen carbonate (Baking soda).

`NaHCO_3 \overset{heat}{\rightarrow}Na_2CO_3 +H_2O + CO_2`

On re-crystallization of sodium carbonate, we get washing soda.

`Na_2CO_3 + 10H_2O→ Na_2CO_3. 10H_2O`

Chemical Properties of Washing Soda

   1.  On heating, washing soda losses 9 molecules of water, and monohydrate is formed. This process is known as ‘efflorescence

 `Na_2CO_3. 10H_2O \overset{373k}{\rightarrow} Na_2CO_3. H_2O + 9H_2O`

  2.  When the monohydrate of washing soda is heated above 373K, it losses water molecule completely and form a white powder called soda ash.

 `Na _2CO_3. H_2O \overset{above    373K}{\rightarrow} Na_2CO_3 + H_2O`

Uses of Washing Soda

   1.  It is used as a cleansing agent for domestic purposes.

   2.  It is used in softening hard water.

   3.  In the manufacturing of other sodium compounds like sodium silicates, sodium hydroxide, etc.

   4.  In the manufacturing of paper, soap, and detergents.

FAQs

   1.  Why is the preparation of washing soda called the ammonia soda process?

Ans – Ammonia is an essential component in making washing soda from sodium chloride, that’s why it is called the ammonia soda process.
