8. FAQs
Bleaching Powder Formula
`CaOCl_2` or CaCl(OCl)
Chemical Name of Bleaching Powder
Calcium oxychloride or calcium chloro hypochlorite
Physical Properties of Bleaching Powder
1. It
is a yellow solid substance with a sharp strong smell.
2. It
is soluble in cold water.
Preparation Method of Bleaching Powder
Dry calcium hydroxide and chlorine gas are used in the
preparation of bleaching powder.
Bleaching powder is obtained when Chlorine gas is
passed over dry slaked lime (calcium hydroxide).
Following is the chemical equation for the preparation of bleaching
powder
`Ca(OH)_2 + Cl_2 →CaOCl_2 + H_2O`
Chemical Properties of Bleaching Powder
1. Reaction
with carbon dioxide - Bleaching powder reacts with
atmospheric `CO_2`(when kept open) and releases chlorine gas.
`CaOCl_2 + CO_2 → CaCO_3 + Cl_2`
2. Reaction
with sulphuric acid – Bleaching
powder reacts with dil. `H_2SO_4` forms chlorine gas.
`CaOCl_2 + H_2SO_4 → CaSO_4 + H_2O + Cl_2↑`
3. Reaction
with HCl - Bleaching powder reacts with dil. HCl forms
chlorine gas.
`CaOCl _2 + 2HCl → CaCl_2 + H_2O + Cl_2↑`
Uses of Bleaching Powder
1. It
is used in laundries to bleach clothes.
2. It
is used to bleach paper, cotton.
3. It
is used to disinfect drinking water.
4. It
is used in manufacturing chloroform.
5. It
is used as an oxidizing agent in industries.
6. It
is an antiseptic.
7. It
is used as a laboratory reagent.
Bleaching Action of Bleaching Powder
The bleaching action of bleaching powder is due to nascent
or atomic oxygen.
Chlorine gas which is released from bleaching powder
reacts with water and forms nascent oxygen[O] that oxidizes the coloured
substance to colourless substance.
So bleaching action of bleaching powder is an oxidation
reaction due to the formation of nascent oxygen.
`Cl_2+ H_2O →2HCl + [O]`
Coloured substance + [O] →colourless substance
