Chemical reactions are an important part of our daily life. today, you will learn What happens when potassium iodide solution is added to a solution of lead nitrate? The reaction is related to Chemical reactions and equations.
When lead nitrate reacts with potassium
iodide, a yellow precipitate is formed, so a precipitation reaction occurs.
In this reaction, solid lead iodide and aqueous
potassium nitrate are formed.
The balanced chemical equation for the reaction is
Pb(NO3)2 + 2KI → PbI2
+ 2KNO3
`Pb(NO3)_2 → Pb^(2+)+ NO_3^-`
`KI → K^++ I^-`
`Pb^(2+)+ I^- →PbI_2 `
`K^++ NO_3^- →KNO_3`
The lead
cations (`Pb^2+`) from the lead nitrate solution combine with the
iodide anions (`I^-`) from the potassium iodide solution to form solid lead iodide
(`PbI_2`), a yellow precipitate. At the same time, potassium
cations (`K^+`) from the potassium iodide solution combine with the
nitrate anions (`NO3^-`) from the lead nitrate solution to form aqueous potassium
nitrate (`KNO_3`), which remain in the solution.
Due to the formation of a precipitate, the reaction is
called a ‘Precipitation reaction’
The reaction between lead nitrate and potassium iodide is a double
displacement reaction because the exchange of ions takes place.
