Chemical reactions are an important part of our life. These reactions are used in our daily life in different fields. Today we will learn what happens when copper is heated in air?
Copper is heated in the air
Copper is a metal and when it is heated in air, black
copper oxide is formed. Copper reacts with oxygen to form copper oxide.
The balanced chemical equation of heating copper in the
air
2Cu+O2→2CuO
Copper is a reddish brown metal when it is heated in
air, copper gets oxidized into copper(II) oxide which is black in colour.
Because copper gains oxygen so it is oxidized. so this
is an ‘Oxidation reaction’.
But at the same time, oxygen gets reduced, so it is a
reduction reaction.
Oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously so
it is called the ‘Redox reaction’
