What happens to natural gas when it is burned

When you have gone through the Chemical reaction and equation then you must have come across the question of what happens to natural gas when it is burned. Today we will discuss the process of burning of natural gas.

What is Natural Gas?

Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases, but the primary constituent is methane (`CH_4`) with small amounts of ethane, propane, and butane.

Natural gas is found in the depths of the earth.

 How does natural gas burn?

Natural gas is a highly inflammable fuel that burns easily when it comes into contact with a flame. When natural gas is burned, it releases energy in the form of heat and light.

Apart from the heat, the burning of natural gas produces carbon dioxide and water.

`CH_4 + O_2\rightarrow CO_2+ H_2O + \text{Energy}`

Burning of natural gas is a combustion reaction in which methane is burned with an oxidizing agent(oxygen) to produce `CO_2` and `H_2O`.

In this reaction, a large amount of heat so it is also an exothermic reaction.

FAQs

    1.  Burning of natural gas is which type of reaction?

Ans.- Burning of natural gas is a combustion reaction.

2..  Is the burning of natural gas an exothermic reaction?

Ans.-  Yes, the burning of natural gas is an exothermic reaction as a large amount of heat is produced during the reaction.

3.  Is the burning of natural gas a combination reaction?

Ans.-  No, the burning of natural gas is not a combination reaction. In a combination reaction, two substances combine to form one product.

4.  What is natural gas made of?

Ans. – Natural gas is made of hydrocarbons mainly methane and a small amount of ethane, and propane.

5.  What are the by-products that result from burning natural gas?

Ans.- Carbon dioxide and water

6.  How does burning natural gas affect the environment?

Ans.- Burning of natural gas has both positive and negative effects. It is clean fuel but produces `CO_2` gas in the environment.

6.  What is the chemical process that occurs when natural gas is burned?

Ans.-  Chemical process called ‘Combustion’
