Activity 16.5 Class 8 Science Chapter 16 Solution

we will go through activity 16.5 class 8 science chapter 16 Light. In this activity 16.5, we will discuss image formation by two plane mirrors placed at different angles touching their edges.. You should also go through activity 16.4  to get more about reflection.

Activity

  ·     Take two plane mirrors.

  ·     Set them at right angles to each other with their edges touching.

  ·     To hinge them you can use adhesive tape.

  ·     Place a coin in between the mirrors.

  ·     How many images of the coin do you see?

  ·     Now hinge the mirrors using the adhesive tape at different angles, say 45°, 60°, 120°, 180°, etc.

  ·     Place some object (say a candle) in between them.

  ·     Note down the number of images of the object in each case.

  ·     Finally, set the two mirrors parallel to each other.

  ·      Find out how many images of a candle placed between them are formed.

Observation and explanation

When two plane mirrors are placed at right angles with their edge touching and a coin is placed between two mirrors, we get four images.

Now mirrors are hinged at different angles and we get images of the coin.

When two plane mirrors are placed parallel and a candle is placed between them, we get infinite images.

Conclusion

We can get different numbers of images when an object is placed between two plane mirrors placed at different angles.
