we will go through activity 16.2 class 8 science chapter 16 Light. In this activity 16.2, we will discuss the second law of reflection.
Activity
· Perform
Activity 16.1 again.
· This
time use a sheet of stiff paper or chart paper.
· Let
the sheet project a little beyond the edge of the Table.
· Cut
the projecting portion of the sheet in the middle.
· Look
at the reflected ray.
· Make sure that the reflected ray extends to
the projected portion of the paper.
· Bend
that part of the projected portion on which the reflected ray falls.
· Can you still see the reflected ray?
· Bring
the paper back to its original position.
· Can you see the reflected ray again?
· What
do you infer?
Observation and explanation
We will use the material used
in activity 16.1’, in this activity. The sheet of paper spread on the table
represents one plane.
The incident ray from the
torch incident on the mirror and gets reflected.
We can see the reflected
ray on the sheet of paper.
Now we bend the part of
the projected portion of the sheet where the reflected ray falls.
Now, we can’t see the
reflected ray but when we spread the sheet again, the reflected ray is visible again.
Why did this happen?
When we bend the paper, we create a plane different
from the plane in which the incident ray and the normal lie but we can’t see the reflected ray.
When we spread the sheet, we can see an incident ray,
normal, and reflected ray in the same plane.
This activity infers
the second law of reflection.
Conclusion
Activity 16.2 explains the second law of
reflection.
