Activity 13.8 Class 8 Science Chapter 13 Solution

Activity

 

   ·     Take a bucket or a bathtub.

   ·      Fill it with clean water.

   ·     Take a small bell in one hand.

   ·     Shake this bell inside the water to produce sound.

   ·     Make sure, that the bell does not touch the body of the bucket or the tub.

   ·     Place your ear gently on the water's surface. (Be careful: the water should not enter your ear.)

   ·     Can you hear the sound of the bell?

   ·     Does it indicate that sound can travel through liquids?

Observation and explanation

As suggested, we take a bucket and fill it with water and shake the bell inside the bucket.

 We can hear the sound of the bell.

The sound waves travel through the water (liquids).

The sound waves need a medium to propagate and this has been explained in activity 13.7.
