In this post, you will find NCERT
Science Class 8 Chapter 13 activity 13.6 and after reading this, you can
understand the meaning of sound, characteristics of sound, propagation of
sound, properties of sound, and types of sound waves. You should also go through
activity 13.5 of chapter 13.
Activity
· Take
two rubber strips of the same size.
· Place these two pieces one above the other and
stretch them tight.
· Now
blow air through the gap between them.
· As the air blows through the stretched rubber
strips, a sound is produced.
· You
can also take a piece of paper with a narrow slit and hold it between your
fingers as shown in Fig.
· Now
blow through the slit and listen to the sound.
· Our
vocal cords produce sound in a similar manner.
·
Observation and Explanation
When rubber strips are stretched tightly and the air is blown
through the gap, the rubber strips begin to vibrate and produce sound.
Similarly, in humans, the sound is produced by the voice box
or the larynx. Two vocal cords are stretched across the voice box and there is
a slit between two cords. When air passes through the slit, vocal cords start vibrating.
Conclusion
This activity shows that vibrating parts produce
sound.
