Activity 12.1 Class 8 Science
· Gently
push a book on a table [Fig(a)].
· You
observe that it stops after moving for some distance.
· Repeat this activity pushing the book from the
opposite direction [Fig. (b)].
· Does
the book stop this time, too?
· Can
you think of an explanation?
· Can
we say that a force must be acting on the book opposing its motion?
· This force is called the force of friction.
Observation and Explanation
When the book is pushed on the surface of the table,
it stops after moving some distance and when the book is pushed in the opposite
direction, at this time it stops also.
It happens because a force acts on the book (any object)
in the opposite direction of the motion. This force is known as a force of friction.
The force of friction acts between the surface of the book
and the surface of the table.
Conclusion
This activity explains the force of friction
acting between two surfaces.
