Activity 11.3 Class 8 Science
· Take
a rubber ball and place it on a level surface such as a tabletop or a concrete
floor.
· Now,
gently push the ball along the level surface.
· Does the ball begin to move?
· Push
the ball again while it is still moving.
· Is
there any change in its speed?
· Does it increase or decrease?
· Next,
place your palm in front of the moving ball.
· Remove
your palm as soon as the moving ball touches it.
· Does your palm apply force on the ball?
· What
happens to the speed of the ball now?
· Does
it increase or decrease?
· What would happen if you let your palm hold the
moving ball?
Force applied on the moving object |
Observation and explanation
When we push the ball, it starts moving on the surface
at a uniform speed.
When a force (push) is applied to the moving ball,
its speed increases.
Now we place our palm in front of the moving ball, its
speed decreases but when we hold the ball with our palm, its speed becomes zero.
So when a force is applied to an object or a body, it
may change its speed.
When the force applied to the object is in the
direction of the motion, the speed of the object increases.
But when the force is in the direction opposite to the motion, the speed
decreases.
Conclusion
This activity shows that force applied to the object
can change the speed of the object or change the direction of motion.
