You are suggested to study NCERT activity 6.2 class 8 science explanation
with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on activity 6.2
class 8 science.
Activity 6.2 Class 8 Science
· Fix a lighted candle on a table.
· Put a glass chimney over the candle and rest it on a few wooden blocks in such a way that air can enter the chimney.
· Observe what happens to the flame.
· Now remove the blocks and let the chimney rest on the table.
· Again, observe the flame.
· Finally, put a glass plate over the chimney.
· Watch the flame again.
· What happened in the three cases?
· Does the flame flicker off?
· Does it flicker and give smoke?
· Does it burn unaffected?
· Can you infer anything at all about the role played by air in the process of burning?

We have three
cases-
In the first case
Candle burns
without any hindrance and flame do not flicker off.
In the second
case
Candle burns for
some time but at last flickers off
In the third case
The candle flickers off
and produces smoke.
Explanation of
Activity 6.2 Class 8 Science
In the first case, the candle burns unaffectedly because air flows without any hindrance from the bottom.
In the second case, the flame flickers off and smoke
is produced because air does not flow.
In the third case, the flame goes off due to because
the air is not available.
Oxygen is essential for the combustion or burning process.
