In this post, you will find NCERT
Science Class 8 Chapter 4 Materials: Metals and Non-metals Activity solutions. Class 8 science chapter 4
consists of NCERT Activity 4.5
Class 8 Science Explanation with a conclusion.
NCERT Activity 4.5 Class 8 Science Explanation with a conclusion
You are suggested to study NCERT activity 4.5 class 8 science explanation
with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on activity 4.5
class 8 science.
Activity 4.5 Class 8 Science
· Take a 250mL beaker/glass tumbler.
· Fill half of it with water.
· Now carefully cut a small piece of sodium metal.
· Dry it using filter paper and wrap it in a small piece of cotton.
· Put the sodium piece wrapped in cotton into the beaker.
· Observe carefully.
· When the reaction stops, touch the beaker.
· What do you feel?
· Has the beaker become hot?
· Test the solution with red and blue litmus paper.
· Is the solution acidic or basic?
Precaution: - To be demonstrated by the teacher. During the demonstration
special care should be taken that eh size of the sodium metal piece is roughly
the size of wheat grain. It should be held with a pair of tongs.
During observation
keep away from the beaker.
Observation of activity 4.5 Class 8 Science
Sodium
metal glows and makes the beaker warm. Its solution turns red litmus into the blue.
Explanation of activity 4.5 Class 8 Science
Sodium
is a highly reactive metal and its reaction with water is explosive.
When
sodium is added to water, it reacts with water vigorously. During this reaction, heat is produced with an explosion.
Na + H2O → NaOH+ H2↑
In this reaction, hydrogen gas is produced and this
gas is highly inflammable.
When the reaction stops, metal hydroxide (Sodium hydroxide)
is formed which is basic in nature, it turns red litmus paper into the blue.
Conclusion of activity 4.5 Class 8 Science
Metals react with water to form hydroxides.
