NCERT Activity 4.2 Class 8 Science Explanation with a conclusion

You are suggested to study NCERT activity 4.2 class 8 science explanation with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on activity 4.2 class 8 science.

Activity 4.2 Class 8 Science

·     Recall how to make an electric circuit to test whether electricity can pass through an object or not.

·     You might have performed the activity with various objects in class VI.

·     Now, repeat the activity with the materials mentioned in the table.

·     Observe and group these materials into good conductors and poor conductors

S. No.

Materials

Good conductor/poor conductor

1

Iron rod/nail

2

Sulphur

3

Coal piece

4

Copper wire

Procedure of Activity 4.2 Class 8 Science

·     First of all connect a battery to a torch bulb with connected wires.

·     Leave the ends A and B wire free.

·     Now place the given material one by one between ends A and B to complete the circuit.

·     Check if the bulb glows or not.

Explanation of Activity 4.2 Class 8 Science

Metals have free electrons which conduct electricity from one end to the other.

Nonmetals don’t have any free electrons so they do not conduct electricity.

Exception: Graphite (In graphite, each carbon has one free electron so graphite electrons)

Conclusion   of Activity 4.2 Class 8 Science

This activity shows that metals are good conductors of electricity and non-metals are poor conductors.
