Activity 4.1 Class 8 Science

   ·     Take a small iron nail, a coal piece, a piece of thick aluminium wire and a pencil lead.

   ·     Beat the iron nail with a hammer.

   ·     Take care that you don’t hurt yourself in the process.

   ·     Try to hit hard . hit hard the aluminium wire also.

   ·     Then repeat the same kind of treatment on the coal piece and pencil lead. Record your observation in the table.

Explanation of Activity 4.1 Class 8 Science

Iron and aluminium are metals and they are malleable and this property is known as malleability.


Malleability: - The property of metals by which they can be beaten into thin sheets.  This property is the characteristics property of metals


On the other hand, coal and pencil lead(graphite) are non-metals and they are brittle in nature. So when they are beaten with a hammer, they get broken down into pieces.

This activity shows that metals are malleable and non-metals are brittle in nature.
