· Set
up the apparatus as shown in the figure.
· Place
a wooden block of known mass in front of the trolley at a convenient fixed
distance.
· Place
a known mass on the pan so that the trolley starts moving.
· The
trolley moves forward and hits the wooden block.
· Fix
a stop on the table in such a manner that the trolley stops after hitting the
block. The block gets displaced.
· Note
down the displacement of the block. This means work is done on the block by the
trolley as the block has gained energy.
· From
where does this energy come?
· Repeat
this activity by increasing the mass of the pan. In which case is the
displacement more?

which case is the work done more?

When a mass is placed on the pan, the trolley starts moving and hits the block, it gets displaced.
Explanation of activity 11.7 class 9 science
When a mass is placed on a pan, it exerts a force(F)
on the trolley and the trolley starts moving. The kinetic energy is transferred
to the block. This kinetic energy is due to the change in the potential energy of
the pan and mass system.
When the mass is increased in the pan, this time more
potential energy is converted into more kinetic energy. so the trolley hits the
block with more force and the block gets displaced more.
In the second situation, more work is done because both
force and displacement are more than in the first situation.
Conclusion of activity 11.7 class 9 science
This activity shows that due to much energy in the
moving body causes more work done.
