Activity 11.3 Class 9 Science
· Think
of situations when the object is not displaced in spite of a force acting on
it.
· Also
think of situations when an object gets displaced in the absence of a force
acting on it.
· List
all the situations that you can think of for each.
· Discuss
with your friends whether work is done in these situations.
Observation and explanation of activity 11.3 class 9 science
When we push a large stone or rock, it is not displaced
while we apply a force on it.
A car, on a hilly road, moves without applying external
force.
So we have these two conditions. Let us discuss
(i). When we apply force on a large stone or rock, it does
not move an inch so there is no
displacement. This means no work is done.
(ii). On a hilly road(slope), the car moves without external
force being applied to it. In this condition, displacement is present but the force is absent.
We know that (i) Force and (ii) displacement both require work.
According to the equation
W=Fs
Where
W= work
F= Force
S= displacement
If F = 0 , s = 1m
W= 0 × 1= 0
so, work is zero
If F= 1N , s=0
W= 1 × 0= 0
so, work is zero
So we can easily understand that work will be zero
when either force or displacement is absent.
Conclusion of activity 11.3 class 9 science
So it can be concluded that both Force and displacement are necessary for work to be done.
