Activity 9.5 Class 9 Science Chapter 9
You are suggested to study NCERT activity 9.5 class 9 science
chapter 9 explanation with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based
on the activity 9.5 class 9 science.
Activity 9.5 Class 9 Science
· Take
a big rubber balloon and inflate it fully. Tie its neck using a thread. Also, use adhesive tape. Fix a straw on the surface of this balloon.
· Pass
a thread through the straw and hold one end of the thread in your hand or fix
it on the wall.
· Ask
your friend to hold the other end of the thread or fix it on a wall at some
distance.
· Now
remove the thread tied to the neck of the balloon. Let the air escape from the mouth of the balloon.
· Observe
the direction in which the straw moves.
Observation Activity 9.5 Class 9 Science
The straw along with the balloon moves opposite in the
direction in which air escapes.
Explanation
Activity 9.5 Class 9 Science
This phenomenon is due to Newton’s third law of
motion. When the thread is removed, the air escapes then due to reaction, the
balloon with straw moves in the opposite direction.
According to the third law of motion - There is an
equal and opposite reaction to an action.
Other examples of the third law of motion
1. When
a boatman pushes the river bank with a pole, the river bank offers an equal and
opposite reaction. This reaction helps the boat to move ahead.
2. When
a gun recoils, an equal and opposite force is exerted on the gun. The gun moves
backward.
3. Motion
of rocket and Jet aeroplanes.
Conclusion Activity 9.5 Class 9 Science
This activity demonstrates the ‘Third law of motion.’
