Activity 9.4 Class 9 Science
· Request
two children to stand on two separate carts.
· Give
them a bag full of sand or some other heavy object. Ask them to play a game of
catch with the bag.
· Does
each of them receive an instantaneous reaction as a result of throwing the sandbag(action)?
· You
can paint a white line on cartwheels to observe the motion of the two carts
when the children throw the bag toward each other.

Observation Activity 9.4 Class 9 Science
When the boy throws the bag toward the girl, the cart
of the boy moves backward and when the girl throws the bag towards the boy, the
cart of the girl moves backward.
Explanation Activity 9.4 Class 9 Science
The boy and the girl throwing the bag is known as ‘action’
and the movement of the cart backward (in the opposite direction) is known as ‘reaction’.
When the bag is thrown, a force is applied but at the same
time, an equal and opposite force is exerted on the cart.
This is the Third law of Newton.
According to this law, for every action, there is an equal
and opposite reaction.
Important points of the third law of motion
1. This
law is applicable irrespective of the nature of the force.
2. Action
and reaction always act on different bodies.
3. Both the forces of action and reaction cannot
cancel each other.
Conclusion Activity 9.4 Class 9 Science
This activity explains the third law of
motion.
