Activity 9.2 Class 9 Science
· Set
a five-rupee coin on a stiff card covering an empty glass tumbler standing on a
table.
· Give
the card a sharp horizontal flick with a finger. If we do it fast then the card
shoots away. Allowing the coin to fall vertically into the glass tumbler due to
its inertia.
· The
inertia of the coin tries to maintain its state of rest even when the card
flows off.

Observation Activity 9.2 Class 9 Science
When we give the card a sharp strong horizontal flick
with a finger, the card shoots away and the five-rupee coin falls vertically
into the glass tumbler.
Explanation Activity 9.2 Class 9 Science
The five-rupee coin is at the rest and has a tendency to
remain in the same position according to the ‘Law of inertia or Newton’s
first law of motion
Inertia is the tendency
of an object to resist a change in tis state of motion or of rest.
Why does the coin fall into the tumbler?
The force we applied is so fast and quick so there is
no time for transfer of the force to the coin and the coin remains in the position
of rest, that’s why it falls vertically into the tumbler. This is due to the inertia
of rest.
Conclusion Activity 9.2 Class 9 Science
This activity explains ‘ Inertia of rest.
