Activity 8.3 Class 9 Science Chapter 8

You are suggested to study NCERT activity 8.3 class 9 science chapter 8 explanation with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on the activity 8.3 class 9 science.

Activity 8.3 Class 9 Science

   ·     Take a metre scale and a long rope.

   ·     Walk from one corner of a basketball court to its opposite corner along its sides.

   ·     Measure the distance covered by you and the magnitude of the displacement.

   ·     What difference would you notice between the two in this case?

Activity 8.3 Class 9 Science Explanation

We will draw a diagram of a basketball court and through this diagram, we will try to understand the activity.

Activity 8.3 Class 9 Science Explanation
Basket ball court

Let us move from A to C via D

Distance covered = AD+ DC

                             = b+l   ……………………(i)

Displacement = `\vec{AC}`= `\√(AD^2  + DC^2)`

                       `=√(b^2  + l^2)`…………………….(ii)

From equations (i) and (ii)

                        Displacement <distance

So the distance travelled by an object is either equal to or greater than the magnitude of displacement of the object.

The displacement of an object may be zero but the distance travelled by the object is never zero.

👉when an object moves in a straight path without reversing then distance and displacement are equal.

Activity 8.3 Class 9 Science Conclusion

Through this activity, we can understand the differences between displacement and distance
