Activity 5.6 Class9 Science The Fundamental Unit of Life

Activity 5.6 Class 9 Science belongs to Chapter 5 The Fundamental Unit of Life Class 9 Science. You will get a complete solution with an explanation and conclusion. After reading activity 5.6, you will be able to answer the questions based on the activity.

Activity 5.6 Class 9 Science Chapter 5

You are suggested to study NCERT activity 5.6 class 9 science chapter 5 explanation with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on activity 5.6 class 9 science.

Activity 5.6 Class 9 Science

    ·     Mount the peel of a Rheo leaf in water on a slide and examine cells under the high power of a microscope. Note the small green granules called chloroplasts. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll. Put a strong solution of sugar or salt on the mounted leaf on the slide. Wait for a minute and observe under a microscope. What do we see?

    ·     Now place some Rheo leaves in boiling water for a few minutes. This kills the cells. Then mount one leaf on a slide and observe it under a microscope. Put a strong solution of sugar of salt on the mounted leaf on the slide. Wait for a minute and observe it again. What do we find? Did plasmolysis occur now?

Plasmolysis

Observation Activity 5.6 Class 9 Science

    a.   Under the microscope, we see green granules called chloroplast which contain chlorophyll. These chlorophylls perform photosynthesis. when a strong solution of sugar or salt is on the slide. The cell organelles with plasma membrane shrink.

    b.    Boiled leaf peel does not lose or absorb water.

Explanation Activity 5.6 Class 9 Science

When a strong solution of sugar or salt is poured on the living cells, the water of cells comes out of the cell and cell organelles along with plasma membrane have come to lie on  the  side of the cell wall and due to this cells become plasmolyzed.

When a strong solution of sugar or salt is poured on the dead leaf cells, no osmosis occurs so cells do not become plasmolyzed.

Plasmolysis – if a plant cell is placed in a strong sugar or salt solution, which is having a concentration higher than cell sap, then water from the cell sap flows out due to exosmosis. This causes contraction of the protoplasm and it accumulates in a spherical shape. this condition is known as Plasmolysis.

Conclusion Activity 5.6 Class 9 Science

This activity shows that living cells show osmosis whereas dead cells don’t.
