a. Each gains water and swells when placed in water.
b. However, when placed in the concentrated solution, it loses water and consequently shrinks.
Observation Activity 5.4
Class 9 Science
Raisins swell in water and shrink in concentrated solution.
Explanation Activity 5.4 Class 9 Science
Dried raisins have no water inside. When these dried
raisins are placed in plain water.
In this case, the outside solution is very dilute. The raisins
will gain water and swell. This phenomenon is known as Endosmosis.
Osmosis – It is the passage of water
from a region of high water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to
a region of low water concentration.
Now, these raisins are placed in concentrated sugar or
salt solution, in this case, more water from swelled raisins diffuses into the beaker. This phenomenon is known as Exosmosis.
Conclusion Activity 5.4 Class 9 Science
This activity demonstrates the phenomenon
of Osmosis –(i) Endosmosis (ii) Exosmosis
