Activity 6.3 Class 9 Science Aim

To observe the structure of the epidermis from the freshly plucked leaf of Rhoeo

Activity 6.3 Class 9 Science

   ·     Take a freshly plucked leaf of Rhoeo.

   ·     Stretch and break it by applying pressure.

   ·     While breaking it. Keep it stretched gently so that some peel or skin projects out from the cut.

   ·     Remove this peel and put it in a petri dish filled with water.

   ·     Add a few drops of safranin.

   ·     Wait for a couple of minutes and then transfer it onto a slide. Gently place a cover slip over it.

   ·     Observe under the microscope.

We can see a layer of epidermal cells and this layer is called the epidermis. stomata are also seen.

Activity 6.3 Class 9 Science Explanation

The epidermis is the outermost layer of plant parts. Cells of the epidermis are elongated horizontally. These cells are closely packed without intercellular spaces. The cells are thickened on the outer and thin-walled on the inner sides.

The epidermis of leaves has small pores called stomata. it consists of two kidney-shaped guard cells surrounding a pore.
