Activity 5.3 Class 9 Science
· Osmosis
with an egg
· Remove
the shell of an egg by dissolving it in dilute hydrochloric acid. the shell is
mostly calcium carbonate, and a thin outer skin now encloses the egg. Put the egg
in pure water and observe after 5 minutes. What do we observe?
· Place
a similar de-shelled egg in concentrated salt solution and observe for 5 minutes. The
egg shrinks why?
Endomosis and Exosmosis |
Observation Activity 5.3 Class 9 Science
When the peeled egg is kept in pure water, it swells and
in saline water, it shrinks.
Explanation Activity 5.3 Class 9 Science
The shell of the egg is made up of calcium carbonate, when it
reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid, the shell washes away.
The cell membrane beneath the shell is permeable to some
substances while impermeable to others.
When the egg is kept in pure water, it absorbs water and swells.
This phenomenon is called endosmosis.
When the egg is kept in saline water (salt solution),
water passes out of the egg into the salt solution, this phenomenon is called exosmosis.
Conclusion Activity 5.3 Class 9 Science
This activity 5.3 class 9 science shows the phenomenon
of Endosmosis and Exosmosis.
