Activity 11.3 Class 10 Science

    ·     Place a strong source of white light at the focus of a converging lens(L1). This lens provides a parallel beam of light.

   ·     Allow the light beam to pass through a transparent glass tank(T) containing clear water.

   ·     Allow the beam of light to pass through a circular hole made in cardboard. Obtain a sharp image of the circular hole on a screen (MN) using a second converging lens (L2).

   ·     Dissolve about 200g of sodium thiosulphate (hypo) in about 2L of clean water taken in the tank. Add about 1 to 2 mL of concentrated sulphuric acid to the water. What do you observe?

Activity 11.3 Class 10 Science Observation and Explanation

We can see fine microscopic sulphur particles precipitate in water in a few minutes. Light gets scattered from the minute sulphur particles and we observe blue colour from three sides of the tank.

On form fourth side of the tank facing the hole in the cardboard, we observe transmitted light.

As the blue colour has been scattered, we observe first the orange-red colour and then the bright crimson-red colour on the screen.

Activity 11.3 Class 10 Science Conclusion

Activity 11.3 Class 10 Science shows that very fine particles scatter mainly blue light of smaller wavelength and transmitted light contains larger wavelength only.
