Class 10 Science Chapter 5 Periodic Classification of Elements
Activity 5.2 Class 10 Science
· Consider
the isotopes of chlorine, Cl-35, and Cl-37.
·Would
you place them in different slots because their atomic masses are different?
· Or,
would you place them in the same position because their chemical properties are
the same?
Discussion:
The periodic table of Mendeleev has elements arranged in order of their
increasing atomic masses(periodic table with atomic mass). So, the two isotopes
of chlorine. i.e., Cl-35 and Cl-37 should be placed at different
positions because their atomic masses (i.e., 35u and 37u) are different but as
there is no space available for Cl-37 in between Cl-35 of group VII A and K
(39.1u) of group IA.
On the other hand, in the long form of
the periodic table, elements are arranged in order of their increasing atomic
numbers(periodic table with atomic numbers). That's, the two isotopes
of chlorine, i.e., Cl-35 and Cl-37 have the same atomic number (Z = 17) and
therefore they have similar chemical properties. Due to this, they can be placed
at the same position in group 17 of the long form of the periodic table.
Conclusion:
According to the definition isotopes have the same atomic number and so,
they are placed at the same position in a particular group of the long form of
the periodic table.
