Chapter 5- Periodic Classification of Elements Activity Solution
Activity 5.1 Class 10 Science solution with a conclusion
· Looking
at its resemblance to alkali metals and the halogen family, try to assign
hydrogen a correct position in Mendeleev’s Periodic Table.
· To
which group and period should hydrogen be assigned?
Discussion:
The atomic number of Hydrogen is the lowest (Z=1) and also it has the lowest atomic
mass (1.008u) therefore it is placed in group I and period I. As the properties
of hydrogen resemble both alkali metals and halogens,
therefore, it can be placed among alkali metals of group IA or halogens of
group VIII-A of Mendeleev’s periodic table.
Mendeleev arranged the elements in his periodic table on the basis of
formulae of hydrides and oxides formed by an element.
Hydrogen makes oxides similar to alkali metals eg- H2O, and Na2O.
Hydrogen makes hydrides similar to halogens and oxides similar to alkali
metals.
Compounds of H |
Compounds of Na |
HCl |
NaCl |
H2O |
Na2O |
H2S |
Na2S |
Conclusion:
No correct position can be assigned to hydrogen in the periodic table. The position of hydrogen in the periodic table is
anomalous or controversial. Due to these factors is placed in group I and
period 1 because it has the lowest atomic number and the lowest atomic mass
(1.008u).
