In chapter 14 Sources of energy, we have studied about different sources of energy we use in our daily life directly or indirectly.


Now, this activity 14.8 asks to gather information about various energy sources and their impact on the environment.


So, let's discuss


We use different energy sources like

i.    Fossil fuel

ii.Thermal power energy

iii. Hydroelectric power

iv.  Nuclear energy

v.    Wind energy

vi.   Solar energy

vii.  Ocean energy


i.    Fossil fuel – The combustible substances formed under the earth’s surface from the plants and animals buried millions of years ago are called fossil fuels- coal, petroleum, natural gas, etc.


Impact on environment 

    a.   Fossil fuels are organic compounds and on burning they produce other carbon compounds like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. These gases cause atmospheric pollution.

    b.  Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and it traps the sun’s heat and causes global warming.

    c.    Fossil fuels also produce oxides of nitrogen and sulphur. This nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide cause acid rain.

   d.  The particles formed on the burning of fossil fuels are also very dangerous, these particles remain in the air and cause breathing problems.


    ii.    Thermal power energy-  A thermal power plant generates electricity from heat produced by burning coal.

         

        Impact on the environment – Coal is a fossil fuel so you can read the impact of fossil fuel.

  

       iii.    Hydroelectric power – The energy of flowing water and water stored in dams is used to produce electricity.


Impact on environment

Hydroelectricity is generated at hydroelectric power plants, and for these huge dams are constructed. Water stored in dams destroys the ecosystem and biodiversity of a particular area.

Submerged plants in these areas produce methane which is a greenhouse gas that causes global warming.


iv.   Nuclear energy – A reaction in which nuclei of atoms undergo a change is called a nuclear reaction. The energy released in a nuclear reaction is called nuclear energy.


Impact on environment

Nuclear energy is a clean fuel and produces a large amount of energy. But can be hazardous. Harmful invisible radiations are also produced during a nuclear reaction. If these radiations leak accidentally, then they may cause irreparable harmful impacts on living beings.


v.     Wind energy – Fast blowing air is called wind. Winds possess kinetic energy.

Wind energy does not have any harmful impact on the environment.


vi.  Solar energy – The sun is the ultimate source of energy on the earth. Solar energy can be  used directly in solar cells, solar panels, solar cookers, etc

vii.  Ocean energy – Ocean is a powerful source of energy. Wave energy, tidal energy, ocean thermal energy.
