Activity 14.3 Class 10 Science
· Take
a table tennis ball and make three slits into it.
· Put
semi-circular fins cut out of a metal sheet into these slits.
· Pivot
the tennis all on an axle through its center with a straight metal wire fixed to a rigid support. Ensure
that the tennis ball rotates freely about the axle.
· Now
connect a cycle dynamo to this
· Connect
a bulb in series.
· Direct
a jet of water or steam produced in a pressure cooker at the fins.
· What
do you observe?
Explanation
This apparatus works as a model of a small thermal
power plant. This tennis ball fitted with a metal sheet act as a small
turbine. The turbine connects with the armature of the dynamo and produces
electricity.
Electricity, when passes through the bulb, the bulb glows.
Conclusion
In this activity, we can see the heat energy converts
water into steam which is converted into electricity by the dynamo.
Important terms
1. Turbine
– It is a device with rotating blades.
2. Dynamo
– The device that converts mechanical energy into electricity. It is also
called a generator.
