Activity 14.2Class 10 Science

    ·      Consider the various options we have when we choose a fuel for cooking our food.

    ·     What are the criteria you would consider when trying to categorize something like a good fuel?

    ·      Would your choice be different if you lived?

    a.   In a forest?

    b.   In a remote mountain village or small island?

    c.   In New Delhi?

    d.   Lived five centuries ago?

    ·      How are the factors different in each case?

Explanation

    ·      We have various options like wood, LPG, electricity, biogas, kerosene, etc.

    ·      Criteria for a good fuel

i.               It should be easily available

ii.            It should not produce a lot of smoke

iv.          It should produce a lot of heat.

v.             It should be easy to store.

     ·      We have different choices in different living conditions

ii.            In a remote mountain village or small island, we would not be able to get electricity or LPG. Here we can get wind energy, solar energy, and energy from flowing water. These can be converted into electricity to cook food

iii.         In big cities like Delhi or Mumbai, Electricity and LPG are easily available. So, we don’t need other sources of energy.

iv.          A century means 100 years. We live in the 21st century and in the 16th century, there was no fossil fuel, or electricity available. At that time wood, and cow dung was used.

     ·      In the each given situation, we choose fuel on the following basis

i.                We first look for easily available fuel.in the forest, we would prefer wood because of its availability.

ii.            If there is more than one option available, then we would prefer easy to use clean fuel.

iii.         If all the fuels are easily available, clean, and easy to use, then we would prefer cost factor and efficiency.
