In this post, you will find NCERT Activity 3.12 Class 10 Science Explanation that belongs to Chapter 3 Metals and Non-metals. After reading Solutions of chapter 3 Metals and Non-metals, you will be able to understand activity 3.12.
NCERT Activity 3.12 Class 10 Science Explanation
Activity 3.12 Class 10 Science
· Take
a clean wire of copper and an iron nail.
· Put
the copper wire in a solution of iron sulphate and the iron nail in a solution
of copper sulphate taken in test tubes.
· Record
your observations after 20 minutes.
· In
which test tube did you find that a reaction has occurred?
· On
what basis could you say that a reaction has actually taken place?
· Can
you correlate your observations for the activities 3.9, 3.10 and 3.11?
· Write
a balanced chemical equation for the reaction that has taken place.
· Name
the type of reaction.
Observations and Conclusion:
(i) Reaction occurs in the test tube containing iron
nail dipped in a copper sulphate solution.
(ii) The copper sulphate
solution fades the light colour due to the formation of iron (II) sulphate appears.
(iii)At
the same time, a brown deposit of copper takes place on iron nails.
(iv) Thus, the following reaction takes place:
Fe(s) + CuSO4(aq) → FeSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
Iron Copper sulphate Iron (II) sulphate Copper
(v) Iron
is more reactive than copper and displace from copper sulphate solution.
(vi) A more reactive metal displaces a less
reactive metal from its salt in the solution. This is called displacement
reaction.
