Science Activity 7.3 of Class 10 Science CBSE

In this science activity 7.3 of class 10 science CBSE we are going to learn about Endocrine glands, secreted hormones, and their functions.

 

Activity7.3

Object – Identify Endocrine glands, secrete hormones, and their functions

Procedure – First look at the different glands given in the figure and identify the endocrine glands.

Observation - In the figure following endocrine glands are shown:

(i)          Hypothalamus

(ii)       Pituitary gland

(iii)     Pineal gland

(iv)     Thyroid gland                              

(v)          Parathyroid gland

(vi)         Pancreas

(vii)         Adrenal glands

(viii)      In males testes and in females ovaries.


Hormones and functions



  (i) Hypothalamus – Releasing hormone 

Function – Regulation of the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland


(ii)      Pituitary gland – Growth Hormone

Function – Regulates tissue and bone growth, controls the amount of water, controls the other endocrine glands


(iii)     Pineal gland – Melatonin hormone

Function – Induces sleep at night and serves as a biological clock of the body.


(iv)    Thyroid gland – Thyroxine hormone

Function – Regulates the rate of growth and metabolism. Deficiency of this hormone causes overweight and sluggishness and too much of this hormone cause thinness and overactivity.

                       

(v)    Parathyroid gland -  Parathormone

Function – maintains a level of calcium in the blood. Increases calcium absorption and promotes the resorption of calcium from bones.


(vi)      Pancreas – Insulin hormone

Function – Regulates sugar metabolism, deficiency of this hormone leads to a high sugar level in the blood called diabetes.


(vii)     Adrenal glands – Adrenaline hormone

Function – Helps in facing difficult situations and called do and die hormone.


(viii)   Testes – Found in males and secrete testosterone hormone

Function – Responsible for masculine features such as the growth of mustaches and beards.


(ix)      Ovaries – Found in females and secrets Estrogen hormone

Function – Responsible for Feminine features like development of breasts, soft voice, menstruation
