Definition - A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place, or thing.
Examples of nouns –
(a)Name of persons- Ram, Abdul, John, man, boy, Nimmo
(b)Names of animals and birds- Horse, dog, peacock
(c)Names of things- ball, doll, basket, bat
(d) Natural
things – wood, silver, gold, air
(e)Mountains and river- The Himalayas, The Ganga, The
Amazon
(f) Books- The Ramayana, The Quran, The Bible
(g) Diseases
– Plague, malaria
(h) Months
and days- January, March, Monday, Tuesday
(i) Work and function- Translation, judgment
(j) Quality – Courage, bravery, cowardice
(k) Stages
of life - boyhood, poverty, childhood
So, these are some
examples of nouns. Now you can understand it better.
Subparts of
nouns- As you can see
different kinds of words are used as nouns. Now we will discuss subparts
of nouns.
Nouns can be
classified into the following categories or subparts –
1. On
the basis of gender
2. On
the basis of numbers
3. On the basis of the case
4. On the basis of relation
1. On the basis of gender - Noun can be divided into the following subparts on the basis of gender-
a. Masculine
b.Feminine
c. Neuter
d. Common
a. Masculine – Noun that denotes masculinity is known as masculine gender like- father, brother, dog, etc.
b. Feminine – Noun that denotes feminity is known as feminine gender like – mother, sister, mare, etc.
c.Neuter- Noun that does not denote either masculinity or feminity. Generally, they are nonliving materials.
d.Common noun – Noun that denotes both masculinity and feminity are known as common gender like- children, enemies, etc.
2.On the basis of numbers- Noun can be divided into following subparts on the basis of number-
a.Singular
b.Plural
a. Singular – when a noun denote as ‘one’ is known as a singular number like- a pen, a cup, a man, etc.
b.Plural – When a noun denote as ‘two or more than two is known as a plural number like – pens, men, cups, etc
3. On the basis of the case – Different states of nouns on the basis of ‘word relation’ in a sentence are known as ‘case’. A noun has the following subparts on the basis of the relation of words used in a sentence.
a. Nominative case
b. Objective case
c. Possessive case
a. Nominative case – The words (noun) that tell who has done the action or work are called nominative case. Like- Smith played well.
b. Objective case – The person or thing (a noun) on which the act of the doer ends like- Anil ate a mango. Here ‘mango’ which is a noun is used as an objective case.
c.Possessive case – Noun that denotes ownership is known as possessive case like- Mohan’s hat, man’s umbrella,

4.On
the basis of relation –A
noun can be used in the following relation with other words used in the
sentence.
A noun can be used in the following five relations with the other words in a sentence.
a.Subject to the verb
b.Object to the verb
c.Object to a preposition
d.Complement to the verb
e. Case in apposition with the other noun
a. Subject to the verb – When a noun does an action or work, it is known as a subject like- John eats a mango.
Here John is subject to the verb ‘eats’
b. Object to the verb – When a verb has an effect on a noun or when a noun comes after a verb, it is known as objet like- He killed a snake.
Here snake is an object to the verb ‘killed’
c. Object to a preposition- When a noun comes just after a preposition, it is used as an object to a preposition like- The cat is sitting on the table.
the table is an object of the preposition ‘on’
d. Complement to the verb- Noun used after verbs is/are/am/was/were/seem/make/think etc., is known as a complement to the verb like – Ashoka was a king
Here the 'king' is a complement to the verb’ was’
e. Case in apposition with the other noun- When there are two adjacent nuns, the second noun introduces the first noun. Then it is known as a case in apposition. Ashoka, the great king ruled over India.
Here the second noun ‘king’ introduces the first noun’ Ashoka’
5. On the basis of counting – Noun can be divided into the following subparts on the basis of counting.
a. Countable
b. Uncountable
a. Countable – If a noun can be counted, then it is known as a countable noun. Like- pen. man, hat, etc
b. Uncountable – some nouns can’t be counted, they show only quantity. They are called uncountable nouns like- milk, water, air, etc
