Q.1 What changes can you make to your habits to become more environment friendly?

Ans. To become environment friendly we will -

i. Use a bicycle for short distances.

ii. Switch off lights and fan after using them.

iii.Use biogas instead of LPG.

iv. Use paper or jute bags in place of polyethene bags

 

Q.2What would be the advantages of exploiting resources with short terms aims?

Ans. The advantages of exploiting resources with short term aim are as follows:

(i)  We will be able to fulfill the requirement of mass-population.

(ii)  We will be able to get industrial growth.

(iii)  There will be quick development.

 

Q.3 How should these advantages differ from the advantages using a long-term perspective in managing our resources?

Ans. Using a long term perspective in managing our resources will be advantageous to conserve and maintain the natural resources for future generations. Long term aim is eco-friendly.

 

Q.4 Why do you think there should be equitable distribution of resources? What forces would be working against an equitable distribution of our resources?

Ans. There should be equitable distribution of resources so that the rich aswellas the poor can use them. All the people may get the benefit of the development of resources.

Q.1 Why should we conserve forests and wildlife?

Ans.Forests and wildlife should be conserved due to following reasons-

i.   Forests are biological treasures.

ii. They provide timber, medicines, oil, spices, and herbs. Resins. Rubber etc.

iii.  Forests are the hotspots of biodiversity.

iv.  Wildlife should be conserved to sustain biodiversity.

v.   Animals and plants are interlinked and depend on each other.

 

Q.2 Suggest some approaches towards the conservation of forests.

Ans.  The following processes should be adopted to conserve forests and wildlife-

i.  National parks and sanctuaries should be established.

ii.  Industrial exploitation of forests must be prohibited.

iii. National policies and programs should be made to prevent deforestation.

iv.  More plants and trees should be planted.

v.    Indiscriminate killing of animals should be banned.

vi.  Forests should be saved from fires.

vii.  Overgrazing should be prohibited.

Q.1 Find out the traditional systems of water harvesting/management in your region.

Ans. Around Delhi, bundhis are used for harvesting water. In Rajasthan khadins, tanks,nadis are the main traditional systems for water harvesting. Rooftop water harvesting is also common in our area.

 

Q.2 Compare the above system with the probable systems in hill / mountainous areas or plains or plateau regions.

Ans. In hilly / mountainous areas of (especially in Himachal Pradesh) kulhs are used which take the water of several villages down the hillside. In this water flowing in the stream is diverted into man-made channels.

In plains ponds, pools are used to collect water.  Rooftop water harvesting is also done.

 

Q.3  Find out the source of water in your region/locality. Is water from this source available to all the people living in that area?

Ans.  In Delhi the source of water is river (Yamuna). Water from the Yamuna is available to near about all the people of the city. Many people take out underground water with the help of a submersible pump.

Q.1 What changes would you suggest in your home in order to be environment friendly?

Ans. We would like to suggest the following changes to be environment friendly:

  (a)  Use walking or cycling in place of a scooter or bus.

  (b)  Save electricity as much as possible.

  (c)  Prevent wastage of food and water.

   (d) Use more warm clothes in winter in place of sigri or heater.

   (e)  Avoid throwing metals, paper, and plastic.

   (f)  Use solar heating devices, solar cookers.

 

Q.2Can you suggest some changes in your school which would make it environment-friendly?

Ans. Yes, we can suggest the following changes in our school to make it environment friendly:

 (a) We must switch off tube lights and fans when not necessary.

 (b) We must stop running water.

  (c) We should store separately the materials which can be recycled.

 

Q.3 We saw in this chapter that there are four main stakeholders when it comes to forests and wildlife. Which among these should have the authority to decide the management of forest produces? Why do you think so? 

Ans.There are four stakeholders in this chapter- the local people, the forest department, industrialists and enthusiasts.

Among the four the local people should have the authority to decide the management of forest produces because they have such practices to ensure the management of forest produces in a sustainable manner.

 

Q.4  How can you as an individual contribute or make a difference to the management of (a) forests and wild-life, (b) water resources and (c) coal and petroleum.

Ans.As an individual, we can contribute or make difference to the management of:

(a) Forests and wild-life:

 (i)  We will Plant more trees.

 (ii) We will aware of the mass to plant more trees and preventing the wastage of forest produce.

 (iii) We will make aware mass the importance of forests and wildlife.

(b) Water

(i)  We will stop the wastage of water.

(ii). we will harvest and conserving water.

 (iii). we will make aware the mass to prevent wastage, pollution of water and methods to harvest it.

(iv)  We use a bucket instead of a shower and close the tap after use.

(c)  Coal and petroleum:

(i)  We will make the least use of machines run by electricity, petrol, diesel, and coal.

(ii)  We will save electricity.

(iii) We will use public transport and bicycle

 

Q.5What can you as an individual do to reduce your consumption of the various natural resources?

Ans. We as an individual will do the following activities to conserve our natural resources:

i. We can save electricity by using CFL instead of using ordinary bulbs, switch off  the fans, light when they are not in use.

ii.  We will use stairs instead of a lift.

iii. We will use bicycles for a short distance.

iv. We can ensure judicious use of LPG.

v.  We can stop water wastage.

vi. We will wear more woolen clothes

vii. We will use solar heating devices

 

Q.6 List five things you have done over the last one week to:

   (a) Conserve our natural resources.

   (b) Increase the pressure on our natural resources.

Ans. (a)   to conserve our natural resources I have-

Ø  Reduced the consumption of electricity.

Ø  Started using bicycles and public transport.

Ø  Started using CFL

Ø  Reduced water consumption.

 

(b) The following five things we have done over the last one week to increase the pressure on our natural resources :

Ø  We used our car to go to school.

Ø  We used heater and geyser.

Ø  We arranged a dinner of hundred people.

Ø  We used oven and refrigerator.
