In English grammar, countless words are
used and a dictionary contains many kinds of different words. Uses of words in
English is also different. All words used in English form a family known as
“Parts of Speech”. There are eight types of words used in English grammar and
they are termed Parts of speech. These parts of speech show how the
particular word function in a sentence.

1. Noun -
A noun is the name of a person, things, and place. So a noun is a naming word.
A noun can be a subject
and an object. Nouns are generally used with articles but not always. Nouns
begin with capital letters but not all kinds of nouns. Nouns are singular and
plural.
Examples-
John, Mohan, Karim, table, love, Delhi, lion, boy, etc.

2. Pronoun
- Pronoun is a word used in the place of a noun.
A pronoun replaces a specific noun in a sentence. A pronoun can be used as a subject and an object like a Noun.
Example-
John is my friend. He is my neighbour
also
So in the above sentence, the word ‘he’ has been used for John.

3. Verb - The
word that denotes any action, possession is called a verb. The word which says
something about a Noun or Pronoun is called a verb.
Different forms of ‘Verb” are used in
different kinds of tenses. A verb must agree with its subject in number (singular
or plural). Main verb and helping verbs are types of verbs.
Example
John is a boy.
Mohan weeps.
Karim has an umbrella.
Here ‘is', 'weeps' and 'has’
are verbs.

4. Adjective- The word which adds to the meaning of a Noun or Pronoun is called an adjective.
An adjective answers the question of how many, which one, and what kind.
Examples
John is a good boy,
I have a blue car.
Radha is a beautiful girl.
In the above sentences ‘ good’ qualifies the
Noun ‘boy’, ‘ blue’ qualifies the Noun
‘car’ ‘beautiful’ qualifies the Noun’ girl’

5. Preposition – The word which shows the relation between subjects and objects is known as Preposition. The word comes before Preposition termed as subject and the word follows the Preposition termed as ‘object’ of the sentence.
Examples
Hari is standing on the
roof.
The cat is sitting under
the table.
He jumped into the lake.
In the above sentences
word- ‘on’ show the relation between Hari and roof. The word ‘under, shows the
relation between cat and table, and the word, into, shows the relationship between 'he' and 'lake'. So ‘on’, ‘under’ and ‘into’ are the Prepositions.

6. Conjunction –The words that join or connect two or more words, clauses, phrases, and sentences are called ‘Conjunctions’.
Examples
John and Hari are good friends.
Here the conjunction –
‘and’ connects two Nouns, John and Hari.
You can sit here or go to
home.
Here the conjunction- ‘or’ connects two clauses.

7. Adverb - The word which adds meaning or qualifies the verb is known as an ‘adverb’
Examples –
John plays cricket daily.
Hari runs fast.
He always comes late.
In the above sentences
the word ‘daily’ replies the answer ‘when’, ‘fast’ replies the word ‘how’, and ‘always’
adds meaning to ‘come’

8. Interjection- An interjection is a word that shows some sudden feeling of pain, worry, wonder,
pleasure and surprise.
Examples-
Oh! I am ruined.
Hurrah! We have won the
match.
Bravo! You have done
well.
What a beautiful picture
it is!
In the above sentence words ‘oh’, ‘hurrah’,
‘bravo’, and ‘ what’ are the conjunctions.
